City’s millage rate to remain unchanged in 2023
Rockmart,
Ga. – August 23, 2022 – The City of Rockmart is set to tentatively approve
a 2023 millage rate of 8.315 mills, the same as last year’s rate. However, due to the growth in the City’s tax
digest, the City will increase the property tax it will levy this year by 7.07
percent over the rollback millage rate.
This
means that a home with a fair market value of $125,000 will see an increase of
$26.37 and a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $75,000 will
see an increase of $16.47.
The
rollback rate is based on the total increase of property values in the City.
When
the total digest of a taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a
rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue
on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced
had no reassessments or growth occurred.
Before
the Mayor and Council can officially approve the millage rate, they must hold
three public hearings. All concerned
citizens are encouraged to attend. These
public hearings will be held in the Council Chambers located at 316 N. Piedmont
Avenue, Rockmart, GA 30153. The public
hearings are planned for 10:00 a.m. on September 6, 6:00 p.m on September 6,
and 10:00 a.m on September 13.
